Grave II.C.16 2nd Lieutenant Christopher Leckonby Phipps. Observer. 118th Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery attached 15 Kite Balloon Section, RFC. Age 20. KIA 14.8.17. Son of Gerald Edward and Emily Phipps, of St. Albans. A Kite Balloon observer he drowned in Dickebusch Lake when he bailed out from his balloon when attacked by aircraft from Jastas 7 and 27. He had already survived two parachute descents.

KIA 16.9.17. As the Kite Balloon Sections were so close to the front line, they were prone to enemy artillery fire and a considerable number of Kite Balloon ground crew were killed or wounded.
