Son of Gerald Edward and Emily Phipps, of St. Albans. A Kite Balloon observer he drowned in Dickebusch Lake when he bailed out from his balloon when attacked by aircraft from Jastas 7 and 27. He had already survived two parachute descents.

KIA 16.9.17. As the Kite Balloon Sections were so close to the front line, they were prone to enemy artillery fire and a considerable number of Kite Balloon ground crew were killed or wounded.
